A beautiful smile is worth the maintenance

Adjusting to your orthodontic appliance goes beyond the physical changes in your mouth—your oral hygiene will also require some adjustment. Properly taking care of your appliance throughout orthodontic treatment is vital for a healthy smile. The instructions below share more about taking care of braces, Invisalign® clear aligners, or your retainer. If you don’t find the answer you’re looking for, please check in with us. Our experienced orthodontic care specialists are here to make sure you get the best results from your treatment.

Solutions for soreness

Your teeth and mouth may feel a bit tender, sore or irritated during treatment, which is perfectly normal. To help relieve oral tissue discomfort, dissolve one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water; this will also promote the healing of your mouth. Swish and gargle this solution in your mouth for a few minutes before spitting out. You can also apply wax to your braces to lessen the irritation, and a pain reliever will help with tooth or jaw aches and pains. Your lips, tongue, and cheeks will gradually toughen up, but if needed, we can always give you wax to put over your braces to lessen the tenderness.

If you or your child participates in contact sports or other recreational activities, we recommend you schedule a fitting for a custom athletic mouthguard. These custom mouthguards help keep the mouth, jaw, and teeth safe by providing an exact fit—something an ‘off-the-shelf’ mouthguard isn’t built to do. Custom mouthguards also reduce impact to the head should a collision with another athlete occur.
